Remove Net-Worm.Win32.Kido and Fix Kaspersky Installation Error

Yesterday, I got a mysterious case; the customer was facing issues with the activation of the Kaspersky Antivirus 2011. He was getting the error message “Activation procedure completed with system error 2”, and was unable to activate the product.

He was explicitly looking for Kaspersky Antivirus help.

I told, “No, we are not from Kaspersky Technical Support instead we are independent Antivirus support provider but we hold the expertise to fix the issue.

Actually, this is not a system problem, but its an infection in itself. Let me tell about this malware. It has been identified as Net-Worm.Win32.Kido.

It creates files “autorun.inf” and RECYCLED\{SID<....>}\RANDOM_NAME.vmx on external memory drives (sometimes on public network shares). It stores itself in the system as a “.DLL file” with a random name, for example, c:\windows\system32\zorizr.dll.

It approaches in a friendly way and mingles with the system services and can be easily notified under the Windows Task Manager and the Windows Event Viewer with a random name, for example, knqdgsm.

It tries to attack network computers via 445 or 139 TCP port, using MS Windows vulnerability MS08-067. It targets the IP ADDRESS of the infected system. Its not less dreaded than a terrorist and can vandalize the entire system data.

I asked for the remote access of the machine, to which he agreed.

I went into the Windows Event Viewer and the task manager to terminate the process and edited the registry settings to remove the worm eventually.

After troubleshooting the antivirus was installed successfully.

I told him clearly that we are not from Kaspersky but we can deliver the support for the same. He agreed upon.

I took the remote access of the system to fix Kaspersky Update issues. As such there was no big issue; some settings problem was there.

I completed the task as follows:

Navigate to the “Kaspersky” application.

Click “Settings” in the right upper corner of the main application window

Select “Protection Center.”

In the left part of the Settings window, select “System Watcher.”

In the right part of the Settings window, check the box “Enable System Watcher.”

Click the “OK” button in the Settings window.

In the bottom part of the main application window, select Update

Click on the button “Run Update.”

I asked the customer to wait until the update process is completed and then entrusted the system.

He was quite happy with the antivirus support, and wrote a thanking e-mail as well. His approach was so gentle that it left me thinking whether I’m in profit or loss while missing the champagne.

I informed the customer, and started the troubleshooting.

First I uninstalled the AVG antivirus, explored the Windows Registry settings and the hidden system software, and then downloaded a suitable version of Malwarebytes, which is an online virus and spyware removal tool. In no time the system was free from all internet threats. I showed the report to the customer and requested to restart the machine. After doing so, she informed that ‘the system booted well, and in much lesser time.’

Then I installed the AVG antivirus on the system, updated it with the latest virus and malware definition from the official site, updated Windows and configured the Windows Firewall.

After a short documentation I offered the case number to the customer for future reference. Now she was pretty much happy. Her last words, “No one becomes perfect, but some become great” still buzz in my mind.
